At their height, the Hardy Boyz were among the most well-known stars in tag team wrestling. The brothers are still active today and hold the title of TNA World Tag Team Champions. During an appearance on the “WWE Vault” a while back, Matt and Jeff Hardy relived some of the highlights of their careers and talked about what it was like to win gold for the first time in WWE.
Matt explained during the episode that they only wanted to win gold once at most, and defeating the Acolytes in 1999 allowed them to do so. “When people start asking about ‘What is your favourite match?’ this is one of the first ones that come to my mind [The Hardy Boyz vs. The Acolytes, 1999] because this is truly, like us achieving the dream,” Matt said. “I give them a lot of credit because they sold for two unknown kids who were just really getting established and getting some momentum behind them.”
“It was kind of a ‘changing of the guard’ that WWE wasn’t necessarily about big, strong, muscular guys that are six foot-five,” Matt continued, expressing gratitude to Michael P. Hayes for playing a key role in his and Jeff’s WWE careers and implying that their reign as champions was evidence that the industry was changing. The veteran went on to liken being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame to being a tag title winner. “It was a celebration of our hard work, our dedication, and that came from busting our a**.”
